THAT CONNECTION THAT FEEDS US
April 9/2020 |
In 'Namgis territory at Alert Bay there is incredibly beautiful art. There is connected, tended, intentional human presence that goes back. And goes forward. Goes out. And goes in.
Unchosen isolation is not good for us
Our lives bless us
Our lives also try us on for size
And since our lives are too big for us, they tear us at our seams
Oh how they weather us
We are not untouched, we are worn
I am worn
You are worn
I am another you
Unchosen isolation is not good for us
Our lives bless us
Our lives also try us on for size
And since our lives are too big for us, they tear us at our seams
Oh how they weather us
We are not untouched, we are worn
I am worn
You are worn
I am another you
Unchosen isolation is not good for us
We are helpless we are not helpless we are
We are vulnerable
There is no way to not be
You know this - you've checked
Knowing the texture and scope of our vulnerability
we are strong
Showing it for what it is
we become stronger
How can it be
And yet it is
I am he as you are he as you are me
and we are all together
We are vulnerable
There is no way to not be
You know this - you've checked
Knowing the texture and scope of our vulnerability
we are strong
Showing it for what it is
we become stronger
How can it be
And yet it is
I am he as you are he as you are me
and we are all together
James Coen, University of Virginia, (a neurologist) says that the connection that feeds us is intimacy.
He says that we can create intimacy even remotely, but we must intentionally practice
VULNERABILITY
and
CREATIVITY
just like these amazing dancers do in this art film
just like we do when we dance together in class
just like a core of our local community did, last night.
Connected first by mindfully bringing ourselves to awkward video conference
Connected next by dancing in our scattered spots
without a Net
each in our own space
Empowered to remain purposefully connected and reconnected
Empowered to feel ourselves, manage our own energies, and sense the group field
BECAUSE WE CAN DO THAT
as human beings.
Brené Brown says that her research on human vulnerability goes like this:
Vulnerability = uncertainty + risk + emotional exposure
She says: "To be alive is to be vulnerable."
She says: "It is difficult but it’s not weakness."
"It is the foundation and the birthplace of courage.
There is no courage without risk, uncertainty and exposure."

A dog chased me on my bike one day
I was 9 or 10 or 11 or something
He chased me down the road
He leapt up at me, snapping,
scraping my leg with his teeth as I pedalled
He bumped me off-balance
I had to stop
I stood frozen legs tangled in my fallen bike
He leapt and leapt around and around like a dolphin
snapping over and over, so high
scraping my arms with his teeth
My breath halted
while he drew a bead of blood
I was 9 or 10 or 11 or something
He chased me down the road
He leapt up at me, snapping,
scraping my leg with his teeth as I pedalled
He bumped me off-balance
I had to stop
I stood frozen legs tangled in my fallen bike
He leapt and leapt around and around like a dolphin
snapping over and over, so high
scraping my arms with his teeth
My breath halted
while he drew a bead of blood
I know nothing about dog breeds
but now I know
in Basque hills there are huge dogs
In Basque hills there are huge dogs
who are good friends with horses
In Basque hills there are huge dogs
who run very fast
who run to you
and you can't really tell
if they mean well
until you can tell
In Basque hills there are huge dogs and horses
and they say to each other
and they said to me
I am another you
