Guidelines for Practice: getting along together in class
How we gather matters.
When we come to 5Rhythms or yoga class, our sense of freedom, empowerment, responsibility, and security can be enhanced, and it can also be degraded. It's up to us to create mutual spaces that support "the change we want to see in the world". Nobody else is going to do that for us. Let's do it for ourselves.
Guidelines you should know about:
Yoga and 5RHYTHMS:
1. Please fully power off and stow away all electronic devices, unless:
- you must be able to check on a baby sitter or dependent loved one
- you're a medic on call. If you're on call, ensure device is silent, please.
2. Please minimize scents. Allergies to perfumes and other strongly-scented grooming products are very common.
3. Please wear either bare feet, or indoor shoes for support or warmth. Socks are slippery; falls do happen. Street shoes make nasty grit for others' tootsies.
5RHYTHMS:
4. In class we take a (much needed) break from verbal conversation. If you need to communicate with another, most often you can do so with movement. If a chat must take place, simply take it outside the dance space. Once in a while, dancers find themselves in urgent situations that truly require immediate and clear messaging. If this happens to you, it's okay! Do speak up. Use direct words, e.g., "I need first aid." "Do you need first aid?" "Sorry I bumped into you. Are you okay? Can I help?" "I need the teacher." "I'm not available to partner." "No." "Stop."
5. No intoxicants, please.
Please see Joanne Winstanley's "Points for Practice", very helpful exploration and advice about experiences that are well worth our reflection.
